This is an example of Austrian money minted while its Hapsburg ruler was known as Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire. The later example from 1815 clearly has changed the legends to reflect the fact that he was then known as Francis I, Emperor of the Austrian Empire. |
| Napoleon forced the name change when he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire shortly around the period of the minting of this coin. He formed the Confederation of the Rhine under French protection as a replacement for the archaic Holy Roman Empire under Austrian domination. The German states were envisioned as a protective buffer for France's eastern borders. |
| There's a remarkable spot in the middle of Francis' face on this coin and as usual that portion of the coin was weakly struck and easily worn. |
