| The British Navy suffered a series of humiliating defeats in ship to ship combat in the early days of the War of 1812 against the tiny American Navy. An exception was the combat of the Shannon vs the Chesapeake, depicted on the reverse, where Captain Broke emerged the victor and towed the defeated Chesapeake back to Halifax. |
