| Comments. W. Peckham was a general shopkeeper in Appledore, a town
which once possessed a considerable market, but had declined until it was
called by one writer "A small, mean village." The agricultural
land around tended to be low lying and unhealthy and the hovels were chiefly
inhabited by graziers and smugglers. Appledore was in the lathe of Scray
and hundred of Blackburn. Lathe is a term used in Kent for a division of
a county comprising three or more Hundreds. Kent was divided into five lathes:
St. Augustines, Aylesford, Scray, Shepway, and Sutton-at-Home. |
