George Washington | ||
Obverse - Bust of George Washington, facing right. | Reverse - Within a wreath, BORN 1732 DIED 1799 | |
Size, 18 mm. |
A fairly typical little medal, although quite pretty in its simplicity, that commemorates George Washington. These enjoyed great popularity throughout the 19th century so there's no particular reason to believe it to be contemporary with his death. |
Since writing the previous two sentences I've found (February, 2000) a reference on the web that tentatively identifies this as Baker 155A. Produced by the Philadelphia mint in the 1850s this pattern was produced in gold, silver and brass. Of course this may be a more recent copy as it is in absolutely pristine condition and was sold to me for under $5. |
