Frankly, this piece appears to be brass, which d'Essling implies as well, that has been painted a dark chocolate and then lacquered. It may just be a lacquer job that has gone completely bad but the brass color does appear only at points of wear. The obverse is very high relief while the reverse is nearly flat. So of course as soon as I verified it was genuine I had to have it!

Also, the d'Essling lot makes it clear that there were at least two, possibly three varieties of this piece and it seems the spelling errors may have been corrected on those.
