Vern's Comments:

There is another example from the Smith collection that is clearly 1 mm larger than this one. Strangely though, this piece has a pattern of ovals butting against each other on its edge that would make it obvious if it had been shaved down. The series of scratches on both sides are called adjustment marks, caused by a mint worker reducing the weight of the coin to the standard.
